Five fun facts about the Hungarian language
- Hungarian is a part of the Uralic language family. Today, it is the only major Ugric language still spoken by millions. Its closest living relatives, Khanty and Mansi, are spoken by small groups in Siberia.
- Loanwords are a prominent feature of Hungarian. Although its grammar is Uralic, around 60% of Hungarian vocabulary is of foreign origin: Slavic, German, Latin, Turkish, and even Italian and French influences appear due to centuries of contact.
- Agglutination is a prominent feature of Hungarian, extending well beyond merely adding suffixes to show case and number. The language can also string together derivational affixes, meaning a single word can carry an entire sentence’s meaning. For example: Megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért, which means “for your [plural] habit of acting as if you could not be desecrated.”
- Hungarian has a formal second person for both singular and plural; maga and ön (and önök plural) are used instead of te and ti when addressing people respectfully. Maga can sound either polite or curt depending on the tone used, making it a subtle social signal!
- Proverbs are central to Hungarian culture, and are usually concise, rhythmic, and metaphorical, such as:
Aki nem dolgozik, ne is egyék, which means “he who does not work, shall not eat.”
