Interesting Facts About the Tongan Language
Tongan is a Polynesian language of the Austronesian family, spoken mainly across the islands of the kingdom of Tonga – notably in and around the capital, Nuku’alofa – and by Tongan communities in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and beyond. Known to its speakers as Lea Faka-Tonga and closely related to Samoan and Māori, it is the Kingdom’s official language and remains central to everyday, religious, and ceremonial life.
Five Interesting Facts About Tongan:
- The Tongan alphabet features around 17 letters, and the glottal stop (written as a turned comma, like ʻ) is treated as a full letter in its own right, because of its ability to affects meaning.
- Tongan speakers distinguish between the different kinds of “we.” For example, there’s an inclusive and exclusive version for when that “we” includes the person being addressed, versus “we” that essentially means “we not including you.”
- Long vowels are written with a mark (a macron/tōloi), but in practice you’ll often see them omitted. This means correct pronunciation sometimes relies on a reader’s knowledge rather than on consistent spelling.
- The written form you’ll see today was standardized in the 19th and early 20th centuries by missionaries and linguists. For this reason, older spellings sometimes look surprising compared with modern Tongan.
- Tongan has a very particular accent that makes it sound distinct from many other Polynesian tongues. Listeners often notice a particular rhythm and stress pattern that gives Tongan its characteristic cadence.
